ctp / green slip
the one where price is the only thing that matters.
CTP cover in New South Wales is set by legislation and is byte-for-byte identical across every licensed insurer. Nothing differs but the price — which makes shopping on price alone completely rational, and unusually easy.
use the regulator’s own tool
The State Insurance Regulatory Authority runs a free official comparison across all six licensed insurers. It is a government service, it takes no commission, and it is more authoritative than anything we or any comparison site could reproduce. We are not going to put a worse copy in front of you.

the six licensed insurers
AAMI, Allianz, GIO, NRMA Insurance, QBE and Youi. Worth knowing before you assume that is six independent options: AAMI andGIO both belong to Suncorp, andNRMA Insurance belongs to IAG. Four underwriting groups, six brands.
what CTP does not cover
This catches people out after an accident, so it is worth being blunt: a Green Slip coversinjury to people. It does not pay for damage to your car, to the other car, or to anyone’s property. If you only hold CTP and you damage someone else’s vehicle, that bill is yours.
Third party property cover is the cheap product that fills that gap, and it is a different purchase from your Green Slip.
other states
CTP is organised differently in every state. Queensland and South Australia let you choose an insurer; Victoria (TAC), Tasmania (MAIB), Western Australia (ICWA) and the Northern Territory (MACA) run single-provider schemes where the premium comes with registration and there is nothing to compare. If you are outside NSW, check your own state scheme before assuming you have a choice to make.
common questions
- What is a CTP Green Slip?
- Compulsory Third Party insurance is the cover you must hold to register a vehicle in New South Wales. It covers injury to people in a motor accident. It does not cover damage to any vehicle or property — that is comprehensive or third party property cover, which is separate and optional.
- Do all CTP insurers offer the same cover?
- Yes. CTP cover in NSW is set by legislation and is identical across every licensed insurer. Only the price differs. That makes it the one insurance product where comparing on price alone is entirely rational.
- Who are the licensed CTP insurers in NSW?
- There are six: AAMI, Allianz, GIO, NRMA Insurance, QBE and Youi. Note that AAMI and GIO both sit within the Suncorp group, so the field is narrower than six names suggests.
- Where can I compare Green Slip prices officially?
- The State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) runs a free official price comparison covering every licensed insurer. It is a government tool, not a broker, and takes no commission.
